George Stambaugh papers, 1910-1919.

Papers of George Stambaugh of Fulton County, Illinois. Stambaugh served as School District Clerk/Secretary and School District Chairman for the World War I Liberty Loan Campaign in Unit 171 (Elliot School) in Fulton County, and committee member of the Brethren Church of Woodland Township, Fulton County, Illinois. The collection documents his activities in these organizations. Brethren Church materials primarily document the effort to organize and construct the church in 1910 and 1911. Materials include correspondence between contractors and the building committee as well as between committee members; plans and specifications of the new church-- including a rough sketch of the floorplan; quotes from suppliers; bids, freight bills, receipts, and list of subscribers. Liberty Loan campaign materials include Treasury Department information on the second, third and fourth loan campaigns; ephemera; form letters and some correspondence from Chairman of the Fulton County War Saving Committee Ulysses G. Orendorff; reports of subscriptions; public notices; and pamphlets. Elliot school materials include schedules of a Common School, Teachers' Annual Reports, insurance policies, Illinois State Teachers' Pension and Retirement statement, teachers' contracts, and incoming correspondence from a stove manufacturer. Materials on fragile paper were copied onto acid-free paper and filed with the originals.

Teacher and U.S. civil service employee. George Stambough was born in Franklin County, Ohio and attended Ohio State University from 1875-76. He taught school for several years in Illinois and Louisiana. From 1884 until his retirement in 1925, he worked for the U.S. Post Office in Washington, D.C.
